Chapter 15

I didn’t tank that tournament. I got to the main draw and won a match against this jaguar, S. Freta, before losing in the next round. Still, I was pretty pleased with how things had gone—my first win in a main draw on the Challenger tour. So I didn’t resist when Danver insisted on dragging me out that night.

I’d talked to the jaguar in the locker room after our match. He seemed like a good guy, if a little quiet; after our match he’d said, “You’re new, eh?”

“This year.”

“Gonna go far,” he said. “Who you practice with?”

“Danver. Uh, Peterson.”

“Yeah, I know him.” He eyed me. “Cool.”

“Look,” I said impulsively. “I don’t know many guys on the tour yet. Can I get your number?”

I would learn that there are subtler ways to ask if a guy wants to exchange numbers. But Freta, maybe taken aback by my earnestness, took out his phone. “Sean,” he said as he gave me his number. “With an ‘e.’”

“Uh,” I said. “So…’S’…”

He stared at me, trying to figure out if I was making fun of him. I blinked back. “E-A-N,” he said, and watched me write the name down.

And that’s how I happened to have Sean’s number in my phone when Danver grabbed me to go out with him. “Hey, you know Sean the jaguar?” I asked the squirrel.

“Oh sure,” Danver said. “I mean, not all that well. I played him a couple times, practiced with him, but our schedules didn’t really mesh, I guess. He doesn’t talk much, either. Not like you. You can hold a conversation, a guy doesn’t feel like he’s talking to a brick wall or something. With Sean, you know, you could be trying to talk to him about other guys on the tour, or about, I dunno, Shadow Knight shit or whatever, and the only thing you’ll get out of him is like, ‘Huh, cool.’ At least you’ll tell a guy what you’re thinking, you know, like, engage.”

I was learning how to break into Danver’s monologues when I wanted to. “So you mind if I ask him to join us?”

“Hah!” Danver never minded when you interrupted him. He just went with the flow of the conversation. “Sure, he can come along. Wait, is he over 21? Could he buy beer? Never mind, I’m not gonna drink. Maybe just one beer. I had a rough tournament, don’t have to practice tomorrow…I could have a beer.”

So I called up Sean. “Me and—I mean, Danver and I are going out tonight. You want to come?”

There was silence, and then, “Where?”

“Where are we going?” I asked Danver.

“Little all-ages club. Wait, don’t say ‘all ages.’ No, do. We’re not sneaking into a bar with fake IDs or anything if that’s what he’s worried about. Unless he’s 21. You don’t have a fake ID, do you?”

“No.”

“Oh.”

“Do you?”

“No. I tried to get one once, but it was a lot of hassle and I wasn’t sure I really wanted it…”

I let him talk and I went back to Sean.
